Online Search: The Prime Spots

16 August 2009One Comment Share to: Facebook or Twitter

When using search engines on the internet, you will notice that some websites have prime spots in the results, usually at the top. While others find themselves ranking lower on following pages. You might think this is simply due to how the search engine looked up the content. However, in actuality these results have been specifically paid for by companies wanting to promote their website. This is a marketing tactic known as paid search marketing.

With paid search marketing, those seeking to promote their site, bid on particular keywords. Of course, the highest bidder will as a result receive top billing in the search engine results returned. If a person goes to make a search at the search engine and types in that keyword, they would see the winning website’s link first. Research has shown that most people are more likely to check out the first position on their returned results.

There are different ways in which website promoters are charged for this service. One popular method is pay per click strategy. With pay per click, the website promoters must only pay for the actual clicks people make to their website. This is optimal for the websites as they aren’t paying for a service that is not used. With most search engines, the pay per click fees can vary considerably. Also, the fees may hinge on the popularity of the keyword. These keywords in higher demand fetch greater fees.

By establishing paid search marketing techniques, search engine websites have filled several gaps in the market. First of all, search engine sites strive to keep their services free at no charge to internet users worldwide. However, there are business expenses to meet and employees to pay. Paid search marketing allows the search engines to generate funds while keeping the search engines free. On the flip side, paid search marketing allows websites the opportunity to effectively market their sites. Over time this technique has increased rapidly and projections show the trend to continue in the future. Remember without them, search engine websites would not be able to keep their services for free.
